One day, three headlines

Three major financial outlets reported on Sept 18 that Anthropic expects to exceed $100 billion in annualized revenue by end of 2026. The same reports say shares could trade as soon as November. Big caveat: Anthropic declined to comment, and the figures come from unnamed people familiar with the matter.

The revenue numberThe NYT says Anthropic expects to exceed $100 billion in annualized revenue by year-end, up roughly tenfold from end-2025 per Axios.
The IPO timingThe WSJ reported the listing shifted from October to November so investors can see Q3 results first.
Safety meets speedThe move follows CEO Dario Amodei's Sept 12 essay calling for the industry to slow frontier progress.
Nothing is confirmedAnthropic declined to comment, and no public prospectus existed as of Sept 22.

Evidence status: INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED for the event (that on 2026-09-18 major financial media reported Anthropic's >$100B annualized-revenue pacing and a November IPO window, all attributed to unnamed sources; the underlying numbers are COMPANY CLAIM).

Core facts (FACT / CONFIRMED via NYT, Bloomberg, Axios, WSJ-corroborating coverage, Reuters):

  • On Friday 2026-09-18, the New York Times published "Anthropic Pursues IPO Despite Its A.I. Safety Warnings" (Lauren Hirsch, Sri Muppidi, Erin Griffith, Mike Isaac), reporting — citing people familiar with the matter — that Anthropic expects to exceed $100 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026, and that the company is still pursuing its IPO even as CEO Dario Amodei publicly calls for slowing frontier-model development. The NYT reported the schedule would have shares trading by sometime in November.
  • Bloomberg (same day, 8:33 PM UTC) summarized the NYT report: "Anthropic Sales Near $100 Billion Before November IPO, NYT Says" — Anthropic PBC expected to generate more than $100B in annualized revenue this year "as it continues to prepare for a trading debut as soon as November."
  • Axios ("Anthropic tops $100 billion revenue pace, report says," Ben Berkowitz, 5:40 PM CDT) added the "up 50% from just two months ago" framing and: by end of 2026 the company "could be one of America's 50 largest companies by revenue and ten largest by market capitalization"; the pace is "more than 10x where the company was at the end of 2025"; growth is "exploding as the Claude Code and Cowork products fueled broad enterprise adoption"; and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said his own lab won't go public this year amid the same safety concerns.
  • WSJ published "Anthropic Shifts Planned IPO to November" (paywalled; substance corroborated via CapitalSignal, TradingKey, VantageMarkets/PYMNTS): the listing shifts from an expected October window to November, in part so Anthropic can show Q3 financial results to investors before the roadshow; the decision reportedly predated the September safety debate and the resulting antitrust suit; a valuation "near $2 trillion" and a raise of "up to $100 billion" have been floated (WSJ also published a "What to Know About Anthropic's Planned IPO" explainer citing the ~$2T valuation / up-to-$100B raise figures).

Corrections of the discovery record (evidence-discipline note):

  1. "CEO Dario Amodei followed Saturday (Sep 19) with calls for slowing frontier model progress" is inaccurate. Amodei's essay "We Must Pace the Frontier" was published Saturday, September 12, 2026 — verified directly at darioamodei.com and dated Sep 12 by AP, Reuters, Fortune, and The Economic Times. (September 12 and 19 are both Saturdays, which plausibly caused the discovery error.) No separate Sep 19 Amodei "slow down" statement was located in this research. The NYT/WSJ/press references on Sep 18 to Amodei's "calls for slowing down" refer to the Sep 12 essay as standing context. The essay itself is pre-window context, not part of this window's event.
  2. The "$65B at end-July" figure is attributed in the discovery record to Bloomberg — correct (Bloomberg first reported it Aug 17; corroborated by Reuters and CNBC). The "$9B at end-2025" baseline matches Reuters ("according to the company").
  3. The discovery record's characterization is otherwise accurate; two material additions surfaced during this research and are incorporated below:
    • Reuters exclusive (Sept 18/19): Anthropic is considering releasing a new AI model ahead of the IPO to counter OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra momentum (three sources) — a tension with Amodei's own "slow down" call.
    • Class-action antitrust suit (filed Sept 18, per AP): four paying users sued Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI in N.D. Cal., alleging the labs coordinated to slow AI development via the Sep 12 "pace the frontier" proposals; at pleading stage, unadjudicated (EARLY RESEARCH).

Chronology that produces the window's story (FACT unless labelled; dates matter — the event date is the date of the reporting, 2026-09-18):

  1. End-2025: Anthropic exits 2025 at about a $9B annualized revenue run rate (Reuters, Aug 2026: "according to the company"; internal goal confirmed in Oct 2025 Reuters reporting). (COMPANY CLAIM via Reuters; CONFIRMED as reported context)
  2. 2025-10 → 2026-05: run rate rises from nearly $7B (Oct 2025) to the $9B end-2025 target, then $30B in April 2026 and $47B+ by early May — Anthropic publicly stated the $47B figure alongside its $65B Series H at a $965B post-money valuation (Reuters Oct 2025; NYT June 1; Yahoo Finance; Reuters). (COMPANY CLAIM / CONFIRMED-reported)
  3. 2026-06-01: Anthropic confidentially files its IPO registration with the SEC (NYT); the filing "gives us the option to go public," company says; revenue run rate had crossed $47B in May. (CONFIRMED)
  4. 2026-07-31: run rate reaches $65B (Bloomberg first, Aug 17; CNBC confirmed; Reuters). Reuters (Aug 15) separately reported Anthropic projected Q2 2026 revenue of at least $10.9B — more than double the prior quarter, on track for a first projected quarterly operating profit of ~$559M — and said the company's run rate grew more than 10-fold annually in each of the three years through early 2026. (COMPANY CLAIM-reported)
  5. 2026-08-15: Reuters exclusive — Anthropic IPO valuation "hinges on" 2028 revenue forecasts of roughly $190B–$200B.
  6. 2026-08-27: Reuters/The Information — Anthropic plans to publicly unveil the IPO prospectus after Labor Day.
  7. 2026-09-03: OpenAI releases GPT-6 Astra (context: enterprise competition; via Reuters).
  8. 2026-09-04/05: Reuters exclusive — IPO marketing expected to begin mid-October at the earliest, listing days before the US midterm elections in November; ~$15B revolving credit facility being finalized; banks: Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citi; "Anthropic declined to comment."
  9. 2026-09-12 (Saturday, pre-window but load-bearing): Dario Amodei publishes "We Must Pace the Frontier" (darioamodei.com, ~3,800 words): "We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models." Three-step plan (embedded evaluators — which Anthropic commits to unilaterally; democratic coordination; global coordination). Cites recursive self-improvement and the OpenAI–Hugging Face incident. Altman ("we will do the same") and Musk ("Dario is right") publicly agree; in a Fortune interview the same day Altman says OpenAI will not go public in 2026 ("I would say not 2026"). (CONFIRMED)
  10. 2026-09-16: Bloomberg-reported (via RocketNews) — Anthropic advancing a ~$2T IPO on Nasdaq; Nvidia reportedly considering a ~$10B cornerstone contribution; raised-up-to-$100B possible; MS/GS/JPM lead underwriters.
  11. 2026-09-18 (the window's event):
    • NYT: expected to exceed $100B annualized revenue by end of 2026; pursues IPO "despite its own AI-safety warnings"; shares trading "by sometime in November"; ~5 GW compute expected by end-2026, roughly double by end-2027 (per CapitalSignal's reading of the NYT piece).
    • Bloomberg: "Sales Near $100 Billion Before November IPO" — debut "as soon as November."
    • WSJ: "Anthropic Shifts Planned IPO to November" — shift from October; Q3-results rationale; decision predated safety debate/antitrust suit (corroborated via PYMNTS, CapitalSignal, TradingKey, VantageMarkets).
    • Axios: >$100B pace = +50% vs two months ago; >10x vs end-2025; 50-largest-by-revenue / 10-largest-by-market-cap framing; OpenAI-stands-down contrast.
    • Reuters exclusive: considering a new model release ahead of the IPO to counter GPT-6 Astra; balancing safety evaluation with profitability; IPO could slip past the November midterms.
    • AP (filed same day, reported Sept 18/19): four paying users filed a class-action antitrust suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California against Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google, alleging an illegal agreement to slow AI development; the complaint centers on the Sept 12 Amodei essay ("coordination largely took place on Sept. 12"); at pleading stage — EARLY RESEARCH. (Reported by AP via US News; also referenced by TradingKey Sep 20.)
  12. 2026-09-19..09-22: syndication/follow-up coverage (US News, Rappler, WMBD, Calcalistech, Euronext, TradingKey Sep 20, VantageMarkets Sep 21, CapitalSignal ~Sep 22). Anthropic still has not confirmed any number or date; no public prospectus yet. (CONFIRMED — absence of confirmation)
  13. 2026-09-19..09-22 (post-window retail-crowding signal): AI-IPO trackers (e.g., anthropic-stock.com daily updates, Sept 19–21) report retail investors crowding Anthropic pre-IPO funds as the November slip and the Accenture-embedded-evaluator deal (S16) circulate; "Retail Investors Crowd Anthropic Pre-IPO Funds" (Sep 21 update). Lower-grade tracker sources; treated as corroborating context only (RUMOR/EARLY RESEARCH grade).

Δ

What changed?

  • The ">$100B annualized revenue" marker entered the public record — a number that, per Axios, puts Anthropic on track to be "one of America's 50 largest companies by revenue and ten largest by market capitalization" by year-end, ~11x its own end-2025 pace, in a company founded in 2021 ($1B run rate at the start of 2025, per Reuters' Oct 2025 reporting).
  • The IPO window hardened publicly from "October" to "November" — a sequence documented across Reuters (Sep 4: mid-Oct marketing, pre-midterm listing), WSJ (Sep 18: explicit November shift, Q3-results rationale, pre-dating the safety row), and Bloomberg/Axios ("as soon as November" / "by sometime in November"), with a Reuters-reported possibility of slipping past the midterms.
  • The safety paradox became a market story with legal teeth: the same week NYT framed "IPO despite its own AI-safety warnings," the Sep 12 "pace the frontier" coordination was converted into a filed antitrust class action (Sep 18, N.D. Cal.) against Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI — the first judicial test of "slow down" advocacy-as-collusion, now running in parallel with the largest IPO in AI history.
  • Competitive context shifted mid-roadshow-planning: OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra (Sep 3) took ~13% of enterprise AI spend tracked by Ramp vs ~8% for Anthropic's Claude Fable and led OpenRouter spend for the first time in 2.5+ years (Reuters), while Reuters reported Anthropic weighs an early new-model release to counter it — directly against the CEO's pacing thesis.
  • The contrast with OpenAI's stance sharpened: Altman publicly deferred OpenAI's IPO ("not 2026") citing safety work; Anthropic moved toward listing on the same safety debate — the market reads this as either pricing in Anthropic's dominance or as a caution flag (press framing; INTERPRETATION).

↔

Before → Change → After

🎓 For Explorer
  • Before (through early September 2026): Anthropic is the private-market champion — $9B ARR end-2025, $47B May, $65B end-July, $965B Series H valuation (May), confidential SEC filing (June 1), prospectus promised after Labor Day, marketing slated mid-October, listing before the midterms; OpenAI (GPT-6 Astra) applying enterprise pressure; Amodei's Sep 12 essay publicly calls for pacing while Altman defers OpenAI's IPO.
  • Change (2026-09-18): NYT/Bloomberg/WSJ synchronize the headline: >$100B annualized-revenue pace + November IPO; Reuters adds the new-model consideration; AP records the antitrust class action. The story converts from "when does Anthropic list?" to "how large is the largest AI IPO ever — and what does it mean that it proceeds amid its own safety warnings?"
  • After: A public-market referendum on frontier-lab economics is now dated: Q3 results (October), roadshow (mid-October), possible listing days before the November midterms — against a background of the antitrust suit, the GPT-6 Astra share shift, open-weight pressure (S08 Harvey economics, S09 Xiaomi MiMo), California's kill-switch EO (S04), and the UN agent-control brief (S05). Every enterprise buyer and developer contract negotiation now carries a publicly priced reference point for Anthropic's durability.

⚙

How it works

  • Run-rate mechanics: "Annualized revenue run rate" extrapolates current sales pace to a full year. $9B (end-2025) → $47B (May; +5.2x in ~5 months) → $65B (July 31; +38% in 2.5 months) → >$100B (year-end-2026E; +54% in 5 months). Axios' "+50% in two months" (≈$65B→$97-100B) is internally consistent with the NYT year-end figure — a useful sanity check (verified in the lab, Section 19).
  • IPO mechanics (U.S. confidential filing path): SEC confidential submission (June 1) → public prospectus (after Labor Day per Reuters/The Information; not yet public as of Sep 22) → analyst meetings → marketing/roadshow (mid-October earliest per Reuters Sep 4; Q3 results expected to be shown first per WSJ Sep 18) → pricing → listing "as soon as November" (NYT via Bloomberg). A ~$15B revolving credit facility was being finalized in parallel (Reuters); banks working the deal: Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citi (Reuters); Bloomberg-reported elements include a ~$2T valuation target, up-to-$100B raise aspiration, Nasdaq listing, and a possible Nvidia ~$10B cornerstone (via RocketNews).
  • The pacing/safety frame (why it is "despite safety warnings"): Amodei's Sep 12 essay argues capability growth must be paced (embedded evaluators with employee-like access — Anthropic committing unilaterally; that commitment is separately productized in the Accenture "embedded evaluation" deal, S16, announced Sep 18 in-window). The IPO proceeds during this campaign; the antitrust complaint alleges the campaign itself is unlawful coordination (unadjudicated — EARLY RESEARCH).
  • The economics being priced: enterprise-product-led revenue (Claude Code, Cowork; ~80% enterprise mix per Oct 2025 Reuters), heavy infrastructure intensity (~5 GW compute by end-2026, ~2x by end-2027 per NYT via CapitalSignal), profitability now a stated investor focus (Reuters Aug 15: Q2 2026 projected revenue at least $10.9B, more than double prior quarter, on track for a first quarterly operating profit of ~$559M; five quarters of 10x+ annual run-rate growth), and 2028 revenue forecasts of ~$190–200B as the valuation anchor (Reuters Aug 15).

!

Why it matters

🎓 For Explorer
  • A $100B+ run-rate company with a ~$2T IPO plan is the largest financial referendum on AI-lab economics ever staged — SpaceX's June debut ($1.77T valuation) becomes the comparator; a successful Anthropic listing would validate premium frontier pricing for the entire industry; a weak debut would undercut every lab's negotiation position.
  • It resolves (directionally) the biggest open question in enterprise AI spend: is frontier-API pricing durable? The same week Bloomberg documented Harvey's margin inversion and the open-model exodus (S08), Anthropic's numbers argue the opposite for the model layer: demand is accelerating (Claude Code/Cowork), not commoditizing.
  • The safety-paradox subplot — IPO while publicly urging the industry to slow down — forces investors, regulators, and buyers to confront whether "pacing" is strategy, conviction, or both; the antitrust class action makes that question justiciable.
  • Calendar collision: a listing days before the US midterms (Reuters), one week after California's kill-switch EO (S04) and a UN brief on losing control of agents (S05), and against OpenAI's stated deferral — the AI-infrastructure political economy and the AI-stock story converge in one pricing event.
  • For the window's own narrative: S01 (OpenAI undercutting with GPT-6 Sol/Luna), S03 (Grok 4.7), S09/S10 (open-weights at frontier quality) all landed the same week — Anthropic's $100B figure is the market's answer to "who owns the enterprise wallet," published just as that answer becomes contested.

✦

What became possible?

🎓 For Explorer
  • The first fully disclosed look at frontier-lab unit economics: the public prospectus and post-IPO reporting will expose revenue mix, gross margins (vs the Harvey −50% story), capex intensity (5 GW), and compute commitments — data that every enterprise buyer and every competitor has been pricing blind.
  • A direct public-market arb between closed and open weights: if a >$100B run-rate lab with an 11x YoY pace keeps premium pricing, the open-model tide (S08/S09/S10) faces its strongest counter-evidence; if post-IPO margins disappoint, the Harvey/StepFun/Xiaomi cost logic wins.
  • A new shareholder class in AI governance debates: public investors will hold voting stakes in a company whose CEO asks the industry to slow down — "pacing" becomes a shareholder-communication problem, and disclosures about advance-precision AI (per AISI-style commitments) become securities-relevant.
  • Embedded-evaluator accountability at scale: Amodei's unilateral commitment (and the Accenture productization, S16) means the company's own safety claims will be verified by third parties with employee-like access — a governance structure no IPO-priced company has had before.

◎

Implications

Technical

  • Compute buildout transparency: ~5 GW by end-2026 and ~10 GW by end-2027 (NYT-reported) becomes public-infrastructure-scale planning data; power/water regimes (S17 data-center laws) now intersect a public company's capex promises.
  • Model-release cadence becomes a priced variable: Reuters' new-model-consideration story puts "safety evaluation vs launch speed" inside the IPO window — the timing of the next Claude release (and its safety sign-off) becomes market-moving, not just technical.
  • Product mix: Claude Code and Cowork (agentic, coding-heavy workloads) are carrying the run rate; the "$30 trillion potential revenue opportunity" pitch to IPO investors (RocketNews/Bloomberg) rests on autonomous-agent deployment at enterprise scale — the same capability class the UN brief (S05) and California EO (S04) regulate.
  • No new model/benchmark is in this story — it is a business/valuation story about the platform those models stand on; technically relevant mainly via compute, cadence, and margins.

Developer

  • Pricing stability signal: a successful >$100B-run-rate IPO strengthens the case that premium API pricing (Claude Opus/GPT-6 tier) persists; developers budgeting 2027 AI spend should model both outcomes (open-weight substitution at ~1/10 cost, per S09/S10, vs closed-lab durability).
  • Multi-vendor resilience: the same week's Opus 5 outage (S13) and Harvey's margin inversion (S08) argue for routing layers and fallback architectures even as Anthropic's balance sheet strengthens.
  • API/feature expectations: IPO disclosure will quantify usage-based pricing behavior (prompt caching, batch, Sonnet-tier migration) that developers already exploit; expect the company to optimize revenue per token post-listing.
  • Safety-evidence era: embedded evaluators + public incident reporting (per Amodei's essay) means developers can cite third-party-verified model cards in procurement; demand for evaluation tooling grows (ties to S16).

Enterprise

  • Negotiation leverage changes: a public company must satisfy quarterly expectations; enterprises negotiating 2-3 year API commitments gain (a) audited financials, (b) competitive disclosure duties, (c) a liquid stock price as a proxy for vendor health — and lose (a) "startup" flexibility on pricing, (b) opacity about roadmap risk.
  • Budget credibility: "$100B run rate" resets internal justifications for premium AI spend; CIOs can point to a market-validated vendor instead of defending an unproven startup — while CFOs can point to the same data to demand unit economics.
  • Risk posture: the antitrust suit, the safety-vs-speed tension, and the midterm-timed listing add governance/due-diligence items to vendor risk registers; enterprises should track the IPO's disclosures on compute cost-per-token and gross margins.
  • Timing signal for enterprise platforms: the roadshow (mid-October) and Q3 results (October) will publish the economics of agentic products (Claude Code/Cowork) that many enterprises have already budgeted around — alignment with your own FY planning is now feasible.

Strategic

  • For Anthropic: the IPO is the capstone of the "race to the top" strategy — safety-first branding as valuation — and simultaneously its greatest exposure: the antitrust complaint weaponizes Amodei's own essay; the Nov timing lets it present Q3 numbers (WSJ) but lands next to the midterms and a still-open prospectus.
  • For OpenAI: the explicit deferral ("not 2026") hands Anthropic the first-mover window on AI mega-IPOs; OpenAI must watch whether Anthropic's November pricing sets the public comp for whenever it lists (2027+). GPT-6 Astra's share surge (13% of enterprise spend per Ramp) is the counter-pressure.
  • For the open-weight bloc (Xiaomi/StepFun/DeepSeek/Moonshot): a ~$2T public Anthropic is the benchmark target; every open-weight release (S09/S10) will be marketed against "the $100B lab's price."
  • For regulators/policymakers: California EO N-9-26 (S04), the UN brief (S05), and the antitrust case all gain a public-company enforcement surface; the SEC gets a first-of-kind filer with embedded third-party evaluators and an active safety-vs-speed commitment debate.
  • For the US-China AI contest: a US mega-IPO concurrent with export-control debates (Amodei's essay demands no AI chips to China; Bessent AI talks) links capital markets to the geopolitical frame (INTERPRETATION).

⚠

Risks & limitations

Risks
  • For Anthropic:
    • IPO-execution risk: prospectus still not public as of Sep 22; midterm-timed listing (Reuters) in a rising-rate environment; "shift to November" itself signals cautious bookbuilding (WSJ-reported Q3-results rationale).
    • Margin/capex scrutiny: 5→10 GW commitments, $65B+ Series-H dilution, ~$100B raise talk — public investors will test gross margins against compute intensity (the same math that broke Harvey, S08).
    • Antitrust class action (Sep 18, N.D. Cal.): if the "pacing coordination" theory survives pleading, discovery could reach across the industry's safety conversations; even a dismissed case adds litigation cost and narrative drag (EARLY RESEARCH/unadjudicated).
    • Safety-paradox reputational risk: "IPO despite own safety warnings" (NYT framing) opens the company to charges of talking safety while monetizing speed — especially as Reuters reports it may release a new model early to counter Astra.
    • Competitive displacement: Ramp-tracked enterprise-share swing toward GPT-6 Astra (~13% vs ~8%) and OpenRouter's OpenAI-led week — first in 2.5+ years (Reuters) — landed exactly during IPO planning.
  • For investors/buyers: valuation relies on 2028 forecasts of $190–200B (Reuters Aug 15) — a ~3x continuation of already extreme growth; post-window trackers report retail money crowding into Anthropic pre-IPO funds (anthropic-stock.com Sep 21) — a retail-FOMO signal worth monitoring.
  • Systemic: an IPO of this size re-prices the whole sector; a weak debut would compress valuations across AI names and chill the OpenAI listing; a strong one would deepen the closed-vs-open divide (INTERPRETATION).

Limitations
  • No primary source for the financials: Anthropic declined to comment (Reuters Sep 4/5; no company confirmation of any figure or date as of Sep 22). The NYT/Bloomberg/WSJ figures ($100B, Q2 ≥$10.9B, 5 GW) are attributed to unnamed "people familiar" — i.e., company-sourced numbers carried by reputable press. Per the evidence gate: reporting INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED; figures COMPANY CLAIM.
  • NYSE/WSJ paywall: the NYT (direct fetch 403) and WSJ articles were verified via search-index copies, Axios's attribution, and WSJ-sourced secondary coverage (PYMNTS, CapitalSignal, TradingKey, VantageMarkets), not full primary text.
  • RocketNews ($2T/Nvidia $10B) and the anthropic-stock.com tracker (retail pre-IPO crowding) are lower-grade secondary/labeled sources; used only for corroborated context, flagged in sources.
  • The antitrust suit is unadjudicated and known via AP reporting (filed Sept 18; AP piece carried by US News, Sept 19, and WFTV); pleadings themselves were not fetched (limitation).
  • The Amodei Sep 12 essay date is independently verified (darioamodei.com + AP/Reuters/Fortune/CSIS); the discovery record's Sep 19 attribution is corrected in Section 1.

Open questions

  1. When does the public prospectus/S-1 land, and what does it disclose for revenue, gross margin, and compute commitments?
  2. Is the Q3-results-before-roadshow sequencing (WSJ) bullish bookbuilding or a sign of reduced visibility into H2 demand?
  3. Does the reported "new model" release arrive before listing, and does that collide with Amodei's pacing thesis?
  4. Will the antitrust class action survive a motion to dismiss, and does it affect bookbuilding / pricing (e.g., enhanced risk-factor disclosure)?
  5. Does Nvidia actually take a ~$10B cornerstone stake, and what does that signal about the compute partnership?
  6. Where does pricing land relative to the ~$2T valuation talk — and what does that imply for OpenAI's eventual listing comp?
  7. Do the open-weight releases (MiMo-V2.6 Pro AA-46; Step 5; Kimi K3 stacks) dent enterprise share before the roadshow — the exact risk Reuters' investors cite?
  8. What do the California EO N-9-26 (S04) and UN brief (S05) imply for the IPO's risk-factor language and investor letter?

What happens next?

🎓 For Explorer
  • Days–weeks (late Sep–early Oct): public prospectus expected (post-Labor-Day plan, Reuters/The Information); analyst meetings; Q3 preliminary numbers circulating in bookbuilding; antitrust defendants' response deadline; new-model decision (Reuters sources).
  • October: Q3 results + roadshow (mid-October at earliest per Reuters Sep 4; WSJ says November shift is expressly to show Q3 first); final pricing range; Nvidia cornerstone decision (Bloomberg-reported talks).
  • November: listing "as soon as November" (Bloomberg/NYT) or days before/after the US midterms (Reuters); possible slip past the elections per Reuters' two sources.
  • Outlook (PREDICTION, medium confidence): the listing happens in November 2026 with a debut valuation in the $1.5–2.5T band, pricing somewhere between the $965B private round and the ~$2T talk; the S-1 will show accelerating revenue with heavy compute-intensity disclosure, and the "pacing" campaign will be disclosed as a risk factor. The antitrust class action is unlikely to block the IPO (preliminary-injunction odds low) but will follow it into 2027 as a discovery-heavy overhang; the first material post-listing event to watch is Q4 revenue retention vs the GPT-6 Astra/Ramp-share trendline.

Editorial takeaway

🎓 For Explorer

This is the week the AI business stopped being a venture narrative and became a public-market fact. On Friday the 18th, three of the world's most careful financial newsrooms — NYT, Bloomberg, WSJ — converged on a single sentence: Anthropic is pacing past $100 billion in annualized revenue and could be public within weeks, raised against its own CEO's plea to slow the frontier down. Both halves of that sentence are unprecedented: no company has ever reached that run rate this young, and no CEO has ever taken a ~$2 trillion company public while asking the industry to hit the brakes — then watched four users sue him for saying so. The prospectus, when it lands, will be the most important document in AI economics this year: the first audited look at what frontier intelligence actually costs to make, to run, and to defend. Whether the debut prices at the top of the ~$2T talk or disappoints, the market will be voting on the same question this week's model releases argued from four different directions — is the frontier actually worth the price of admission, or is the real signal the 1/10-cost open models shipping the same week? Every number in this file is still company-claimed and press-carried; the S-1 is the moment the claims become evidence.

Evidence labels used: CONFIRMED (independently corroborated events and reporting), COMPANY CLAIM (company-sourced financial figures carried by press, unconfirmed by Anthropic), INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED (multi-outlet confirmation of the reporting itself), EARLY RESEARCH (the Sep 18 antitrust class action — filed, unadjudicated), INTERPRETATION/PREDICTION (analyst views). Discovery-record inaccuracies (Amodei Sep 19 attribution; additions in-window) are corrected in Section 1.

Lab: VERIFY

Step 1 — Rebuild the annualized-revenue run-rate trajectory from raw sources

Consult sources/S07.md and research/S07.md. Fill a table like this:

Point in timeReported run rateSource(s)Evidence label
Oct 2025~$7B (company told Reuters)Reuters 2025-10-15COMPANY CLAIM-reported
End of 2025~$9B ("internal goal"; later "according to the company")Reuters 2025-10-15; Reuters 2026-08-15/17COMPANY CLAIM
April 2026$30BYahoo/Reuters filing coverageCOMPANY CLAIM-reported
Early May 2026crossed $47B (company-stated)NYT 2026-06-01; Reuters 2026-08-15; YahooCOMPANY CLAIM (company-stated)
End-July 2026$65BReuters 2026-08-17; Bloomberg; CNBCCOMPANY CLAIM
Sept 18, 2026">$100B by end of 2026"NYT 2026-09-18COMPANY CLAIM via NYT anonymous sources
Q2 2026 (separate metric)revenue ≥$10.9B; first op profit ~$559MReuters 2026-08-15COMPANY CLAIM-reported
2028 (projection)~$190–200BReuters 2026-08-15COMPANY CLAIM (projection)

Expected result: every row is a company figure surfaced by reputable press — no row is independently auditable by a third party at this time. The reporting is INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED; the figures are COMPANY CLAIM. Note this split in your log.

Step 2 — Check the arithmetic the press reported

Test the internal consistency of three claims (arithmetic, not oracle — compute by hand):

  1. Axios "up 50% from just two months ago": if end-July run rate is $65B, then 50% higher ≈ $97.5B in early-to-mid September — and NYT says "exceed $100B by the end of 2026." Question: does +50% from July to ~September, then continued growth through December, plausibly land above $100B? Show the math.
  2. Axios "more than 10x where the company was at the end of 2025": with >$100B (year-end 2026E) vs ~$9B (end-2025), the ratio ≈ 11x. Consistent — verify.
  3. Reuters "grew more than 10-fold annually in each of the three years through early 2026": check against the trajectory above ($1B-ish start 2025 → $9B end-2025 → $47B May 2026). Does "10-fold annually" survive contact with the $9B end-2025 → $47B May 2026 segment (about 5x in 4-5 months, which annualizes to well over 10x)? Note the framing.

Expected result: all three claims are internally consistent — the sanity check passes, which is meaningful because inconsistent numbers (e.g., "+50% in two months" vs ">$100B by year-end") would have flagged fabrication risk.

Step 3 — Verify the Amodei essay date (the discovery-record correction)

The discovery record says Amodei "followed Saturday (Sep 19) with calls for slowing frontier model progress."

  1. Open https://darioamodei.com/post/we-must-pace-the-frontier — note the displayed date.
  2. Check the datelines in sources/S07.md: AP via WFTV (Sept 12), BBC ("published on Saturday"), CSIS (Sept 12, "3,800-word essay"), The Chosun Daily (Sept 12), plus Reuters' Sep 12 newsletter copy, The Tribune India quoting Amodei's X post dated September 12, 2026.
  3. Establish that both Sept 12 and Sept 19 2026 are Saturdays (check a calendar).
  4. Search (web) for any Amodei "slow down" statement dated Sept 19, 2026. Expected result: none found; the claim is a date error in the discovery record, superseded by the verified Sep 12 date. Log it as an UNVERIFIED/superseded claim.
Step 4 — Audit the discovery record claim-by-claim

For each claim in research/DISCOVERY_RAW.json (S07 entry), test against research/S07.md + sources/S07.md:

  1. "expects to exceed $100B annualized revenue by end of 2026" → CONFIRMED as reported (NYT/Bloomberg/Axios/WSJ-corroboration); figure itself COMPANY CLAIM.
  2. "up from $9B at end-2025 and $65B at end-July" → CONFIRMED as reported (Reuters $65B Aug 17; Reuters $9B-end-2025).
  3. "IPO as soon as November (WSJ)" → CONFIRMED (WSJ headline + PYMNTS + Bloomberg "as soon as November").
  4. "Reuters previously reported marketing starting mid-October with listing days before US midterms" → CONFIRMED (Reuters via CNBC full text).
  5. "Anthropic declined comment" → CONFIRMED (Reuters Sep 4/5; PYMNTS Sep 18).
  6. "CEO Amodei followed Saturday (Sep 19)..." → REJECTED — Sep 12 (Step 3).
  7. Add the two in-window facts the discovery omitted: Reuters Sep 18/19 new-model consideration; AP Sep 18 antitrust class action.

Deliverable: a verification table (claim | sources checked | found? | verdict), mirroring the format demonstrated in labs/S06.md Step 3.

Step 5 — Reconcile the IPO-timeline hops

Reconstruct the pre-window → window timeline from sources and confirm each hop has a citation: June 1 confidential filing (NYT) → Aug 27 "prospectus after Labor Day" (Reuters/The Information, via press) → Sept 4/5 "mid-Oct marketing; days before midterms" (Reuters/CNBC) → Sept 16 Bloomberg-reported ~$2T/Nasdaq plan (RocketNews citing Bloomberg — flag as secondary) → Sept 18 WSJ "shift to November," Q3-results rationale, predating the safety row (WSJ via PYMNTS/TradingKey/VantageMarkets) → Reuters' "could slip past the midterms" (Sept 18/19 exclusive). Mark which hops are primary-fetched vs secondary-corroborated vs aggregator-only.

Expected outcome

A one-page verification log showing: (1) the run-rate trajectory table with evidence labels (every figure COMPANY CLAIM, reporting INDEPENDENTLY VERIFIED); (2) the three arithmetic checks passing and the math shown; (3) the Amodei essay date verified as Sept 12, 2026 with the discovery record's Sep 19 attribution marked superseded; (4) the claim-by-claim audit verdicts; (5) the IPO-timeline hops with citation tier for each. This demonstrates the evidence discipline the story file applies and leaves a reusable audit pattern for future financial stories.

Time estimate

~45–60 minutes.
